WEB20 Prepositions The use of prepositions from language to language is often different from what you would expect, and we all suffer from the belief that our own language does things “the right way” and other languages do things in a way that doesn’t make sense. Our tip? STOP fighting it! By constantly comparing the grammar rules in other languages as they relate to your native language, you are causing your brain to believe that no other option is possible. To really understand prepositions you should start to notice whether you can hear them when an Italian person speaks. If you investigate and notice you cannot say which prepositions are being used, you might not be noticing them altogether! What you should notice Why is it being used ‘Sono a scuola, entro in classe. Esco da scuola alle 3 e arrivo a casa alle 4’ To refer to movement from/to a place, inside or outside a place 'Al livello più alto offerto dalla scuola si vive all'italiana’ To combine a preposition to an article when the noun requires it ‘Voglio (-) imparare italiano per viaggiare in Italia, ma devo (-) studiare’ Because some verbs require a preposition before the infinitive, other verbs don't. ‘Comincio ora a imparare a usare le preposizioni’ Because some verbs require the preposition 'a' after the infinitive ‘Finisco di studiare e arrivo’ Because some verbs require the preposition 'di' after the infinitive
